The Texas Education Agency recently announced that the takeover of the Houston Independent School District has been extended for another two years.

That means appointed Superintendent Mike Miles and the created school board will maintain control of the state’s largest school district until 2027. That news shocked some, but not many, who always knew the in-game when the Texas Education Agency (TEA) took over in 2023 that this was never a two-year deal.

However, the question remains whether the continuation of the takeover is necessary since Miles has consistently said HISD is in a much better position than when he took it over. Has it been as successful as he claims, because many traditional Black and Brown schools are still underperforming?

In our latest episode of the Defender Roundtable, the panel debates whether extending the takeover is in the best interest of the HISD students and educators.
