It’s another week, which means there is new Donald Trump drama.
But this latest slight toward Black people and minorities isn’t actually new. Trump and his administration slid under his anti-diversity, equity and inclusion initiative that it’s no longer required to explicitly prohibit segregated facilities like restaurants, waiting rooms, and water fountains in new government contracts. This came from a memo issued by the U.S. General Services Administration in February.
Trump has effectively repealed an executive order President Lyndon B. Johnson signed 60 years ago.

But the good thing is this Trump action doesn’t supersede federal laws that prohibit segregation and discrimination based on race. Trump doesn’t have the power to rescind those laws.
The Trump admin removed a federal ban on segregated workplaces for contractorsโrolling back a protection put in place in 1965 by President Lyndon B. Johnson. While segregation is still illegal, this change sends a CLEAR message. https://t.co/OTcfmiVwPu

While mostly symbolic, it speaks to Trump and his administration’s goal of minimizing Black people and other minorities’ contributions to this nation and holding us back. If Trump had his way, he would set us back to the segregated Jim Crow days where White people had controlling power.

In our latest episode of the Defender Roundtable, the panel discusses Trump’s move to allow government contractors to practice segregation, or if they do, it can’t be a determining factor in government doing business with them.
