HISD is addressing aging facilities and improving students’ learning environments. The district is proposing a bond of at least $4 billion, focusing on security upgrades, replacing portable classrooms with permanent structures, and enhancing heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems.

“Our students deserve to learn in safe and secure environments. This bond proposal represents a critical investment in their future.”

This initiative comes after recent storm damage that further highlighted the need for infrastructure improvements. While specific proposal details are still being finalized, HISD officials have emphasized that the bond would not raise taxes if passed by voters.

HISD has established a Community Advisory Committee to gather community feedback and ensure transparency. The committee will be co-chaired by prominent Houstonians Judith Cruz (former HISD board president), Garnet Coleman (former state representative) and Scott McClelland (retired H-E-B president).

Numerous campuses in HISD urgently need repairs and upgrades to their heating and cooling systems because the district last approved a bond in 2012. A bond is usually passed every five years in large urban districts like HISD.

“Our students deserve to learn in safe and secure environments,” said Cruz. “This bond proposal represents a critical investment in their future.”

Joining the co-chairs on the committee are elected HISD trustees Dani Hernandez, Bridget Wade and Patricia K. Allen, along with HISD principals Rhonda Honore, Erica Brame-Manuel and Devin Adams. A full list of committee members is available on the HISD website.

The Community Advisory Committee will hold meetings to share information about facility needs and proposed investments and gather public input. These meetings are scheduled for the following dates:

  • Tuesday, May 28 – Forest Brook Middle School (6-8 p.m.)
  • Thursday, May 30 – Cornelius Elementary School (6-8 p.m.)
  • Saturday, June 1 – Virtual Meeting (10-11 am – details forthcoming)
  • Tuesday, June 4 – Fondren Middle School (6-8 p.m.)
  • Wednesday, June 5 – Fleming Middle School (6-8 p.m.)

Residents are encouraged to attend these meetings and participate in shaping the future of HISD schools.
