In a significant move toward wage equality, Harris County Commissioners have unanimously approved raising the minimum wage for county contract workers to $15 per hour, aligning their pay with that of county employees. The policy was championed by Commissioner Rodney Ellis, who emphasized the need for “fair pay” and “shared prosperity” during the June 4 Commissioners Court meeting.

“Some custodians who clean our county buildings earn as little as $10 an hour,” Commissioner Ellis stated, underscoring the urgency for the pay hike. “With soaring costs and low salaries, more area residents are barely getting by,” he added, referencing a recent study by the Kinder Institute.

The Kinder Institute study highlighted that a staggering 46% of surveyed residents couldn’t afford a $400 emergency expense, marking the highest level of financial insecurity recorded in the survey’s history.

“Harris County is home to ongoing and growing inequality. This is especially true for communities of color, women, working families, and young people,” Ellis noted.

Commissioner Ellis’s sentiments were echoed by SEIU Texas President Elsa Flores, who expressed the broader implications of the wage increase:

“We need to make sure every worker in Houston is able to live with the dignity and respect they deserve. This includes janitorial workers, security officers, and many others who have been left behind. They will now have an opportunity to earn a minimum livable wage.”

The decision was met with enthusiasm from the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) members present at the meeting. Many expressed that earning $15 an hour would significantly improve their quality of life, allowing them to focus on a single job and spend more time with their families.
