WASHINGTON, DC - FEBRUARY 27: U.S. President Donald Trump speaks during a joint press conference with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer in the East Room at the White House on February 27, 2025 in Washington, DC. Starmer is on his first visit to Washington since President Trump returned to the White House. Starmer's trip comes shortly after he announced an increase in UK defense spending, ostensibly as a signal to Trump that the UK is prepared to bolster Europe's security, and as he aims to broker a fair peace deal for Ukraine amid Trump's warming relations with Russia. A new CNN poll reveals that most Americans remain unimpressed with President Donald Trump’s handling of the economy, with 56% disapproving—his worst rating on this issue since his first term. Meanwhile, his approval on immigration has risen to 51%, reflecting support for his stricter policies.

Americans are split on Trump’s management of the federal budget and government operations (48% approval), while his ratings for health care (43%), foreign policy (42%), and tariffs (39%) remain low. His overall approval stands at 45%, with 54% disapproving, mirroring his historically polarized presidency. Economic concerns dominate public priorities, with 42% naming it their top issue, followed by democracy (19%) and government functionality (14%).

Trump’s approach to executive power is seen as a break from tradition by 86% of Americans, with nearly half viewing this negatively. Although 50% believe he can bring change and 49% think he can manage government effectively, skepticism remains regarding his leadership qualities, with only 38% saying he respects the rule of law.

His push to cut federal spending and elevate Elon Musk in government affairs is widely unpopular. Only 35% view Musk favorably, while 53% disapprove. A majority (55%) see Trump’s federal cuts as politically motivated, with 62% fearing essential programs will be lost. Partisan divides persist: 90% of Democrats and 69% of independents worry about program cuts, while 73% of Republicans prioritize eliminating government waste.

Lingering doubts from Trump’s first term persist, with only 40% believing he cares about everyday Americans and just 34% seeing him as a unifier. His policies remain unpopular, with 57% saying he ignores pressing issues and 59% calling his views too extreme.

The poll, conducted by SSRS from March 6-9, surveyed 1,206 adults nationwide, with a margin of error of ±3.3 percentage points.
