We have been sold a dangerous lie wrapped in a glossy, high-tech bow: The myth that artificial intelligence (AI) is our inevitable, objective savior.
From Silicon Valley boardrooms to neighborhood schools, we are told that leaning into AI will make our lives more efficient, our decisions fairer, and our societies smarter. But as the data trickles in, the reality is proving to be far more sinister.
Far from elevating humanity, an over-reliance on AI is actively making America dumber and more covertly racist.
Atrophy of human intellect
The structural rot of automation begins with the erosion of our own minds. When we hand over our critical thinking to algorithms, our organic human skills begin to atrophy. Consider a disturbing study published in The Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology and reported by Bloomberg, which tracked experienced cancer doctors over several months.
When these highly trained clinicians routinely relied on AI to detect precancerous polyps, their independent diagnostic abilities declined. When the AI tools were temporarily removed, their ability to correctly identify these growths dropped by roughly 20% to 25% compared to their baseline before the technology was introduced.
If the sharpest, most highly educated minds in medicine can suffer from such rapid cognitive de-skilling within months, what chance does the average citizen have? By outsourcing our problem-solving, our writing, and our analysis to machine learning, we are systematically dismantling the hard-earned human expertise required to navigate the world.
Laundering bigotry through ‘objectivity’
But the danger isn’t merely that we are dulling our collective intellect; it’s that we’re doing so while reinforcing a digital infrastructure of white supremacy.
The primary threat of modern AI lies in its illusion of neutrality. Because algorithms process math and data, the public treats them as “objective” arbiters of truth. However, as an article by The Guardian titled “As AI tools grow smarter, they are growing more covertly racist, experts find” reveals, these tools are simply getting better at hiding their prejudice.
Historically, racists have always sought refuge behind the armor of supposed objectivity—whether through pseudo-scientific phrenology, biased IQ tests, or redlining maps. Today, AI has become the ultimate vehicle for laundering anti-Blackness disguised as “truth.”
A Stanford University study demonstrated that leading large language models consistently assign less value, lower intelligence, and lower employability ratings to individuals who speak or write in African American Vernacular English (AAVE). Instead of spewing overt racial slurs, advanced AI models have adopted the same genteel, institutional bias that corporate gatekeepers use. You know, the people who wouldn’t dare say anything explicitly racist to your face but will quietly discard your resume because it has a “Black-sounding” name, or pass you over for a promotion because you didn’t fit a culturally biased standard of “professionalism.”
When racism is hidden behind code, it rebrands as objective truth. If a machine determines that a Black applicant is less qualified, or that an AAVE speaker is less intelligent, institutions accept it without question because “the computer said so.” This is an existential crisis for Blackfolk and for anyone who genuinely cares about humanity, equity, and justice.
Systemic roots: The anti-Black operating system
How did we arrive here? We arrived here because we forgot a fundamental truth: anything produced within a country whose founding operating system is anti-Blackness is bound to inherit that pathology. As author and educator Dante King powerfully writes:
“Anti-Blackness is the operating system: a legal, social, cultural, economic, and belief structure that criminalizes, devalues, and deprioritizes Black life to justify political, social, and economic debasement.”
AI doesn’t exist in a vacuum. It’s trained on the internet—a massive digital archive of human history, structural inequality, and systemic bias. Why should we expect a machine to operate outside of an anti-Black system when it was fed, built, and funded by that very system? Garbage in, garbage out.
Yo, we’ve got to find a better path forward. We cannot simply sit back and watch our skills erode while algorithmic white supremacy consolidates its power.
Reclaiming our tools
So, what do Blackfolk—and our allies—do about it?
First, we must champion and seek out alternative technologies built from a culturally conscious framework. For instance, Black scholars have developed an alternative AI application called Aisha, intentionally designed from a Black perspective and reported to be far less environmentally damaging than traditional, resource-intensive AI systems. While this is not a commercial endorsement—I receive zero royalties and have yet to test the platform myself—the concept alone is vital. If and when we interact with AI, we must support tools born out of our own perspective, engineered to resist the biases that corporate tech giants actively ignore.
But technology alone won’t save us. The ultimate solution requires us to disconnect from the digital matrix and reinvest in our collective humanity. We must actively practice and protect the personal skills we are tempted to hand over to automation. Use AI as an occasional tool if you must, but never at the expense of your own critical thinking and creative voice.
More importantly, we must return to the foundational spaces of communal resistance: reading groups, study circles, and progressive, conscious communities. Real, transformative learning doesn’t happen through an isolated exchange with a glowing screen. It happens in face-to-face discourse. It thrives in the unspoken energy shared in a room, the nuance of non-verbal communication, and the literal warmth and encouragement felt when human beings gather in pursuit of liberation.
AI is threatening to make us complacent, uncritical, and blind to the digitized racism shaping our future. It’s time to unplug from the illusion of algorithmic objectivity, sharpen our own minds, and build a reality rooted in community, vigilance, and authentic human intelligence.
