Houston’s Third Ward is celebrating Black Music History Month as The Legacy Project returns this June. The month-long celebration, a collaboration between the Community Arts Collective, the Community Music Center of Houston, and the Hogan Brown Gallery, honors local and national figures who have shaped the genre.
Tierney Malone, co-creator of the Legacy Project, pays homage to the artists who paved the way, shaped our culture, and continue inspiring generations with their music.
The Legacy Project is placing a special emphasis on the musical heritage of Houston’s Third Ward. This historic neighborhood has birthed countless musical talents, from pioneering blues singers to contemporary rappers.
The project will feature exhibits, panel discussions, and performances that explore the lives and legacies of these local heroes. Visitors can expect to delve into the stories of gospel choirs that filled churches with song, the smooth sounds of jazz quartets that serenaded local clubs, and the groundbreaking hip-hop artists who put Houston on the map.
The Legacy Project kicked off on June 9, with a free opening reception at the Hogan Brown Gallery. Attendees explored exhibits showcasing the stories of musicians, instruments, and cultural artifacts that tell the story of Black music’s evolution. The reception culminated with a concert by the acclaimed H-Town Orchestra, bringing the Third Ward’s musical heritage to life.
Throughout June, the project features a variety of free events, including artist talks, panel discussions, and educational workshops. A special event on June 22 combines an artist talk with a live musical performance, offering a unique glimpse into the creative process of local musicians.
