University of Houston (UH) music students, take note! International music superstar Lizzo is back with her “Sasha Be Flooting” scholarship for the second year. This generous scholarship offers a lucky student a full ride, covering their four-year tuition at the Moores School of Music.
Established in 2023 as part of Lizzo’s Juneteenth Giveback campaign, the scholarship aims to empower Black musicians and ease the financial burden of pursuing a musical education.
“Music has been my sanctuary, my therapy, and my voice,” Lizzo, whose real name is Melissa Jefferson, said in a statement. A UH alumna, Lizzo played flute in the Spirit of Houston marching band during her college years.
“I’m so proud to help talented Black musicians achieve their dreams at the University of Houston.”
The scholarship’s name, “Sasha Be Flooting,” is a playful nod to Lizzo’s iconic flute, which boasts an Instagram following of over 326,000 fans.
This scholarship opportunity complements Lizzo’s impressive musical career. A Grammy and Emmy award winner, Lizzo has also received accolades from the NAACP, Billboard Music Awards, Soul Train Awards, and BET Awards.
“We are incredibly grateful for Lizzo’s continued generosity and commitment to supporting the next generation of music students at UH,” said Andrew Davis, Dean of UH’s McGovern College of the Arts.
“This scholarship has the potential to be life-changing, opening doors and creating opportunities for a deserving student to pursue a successful career in music.”
University officials have not yet announced the application process for the “Sasha Be Flooting” scholarship. However, aspiring UH music students should stay tuned for more information in the coming weeks.
