Houston-area high school sports in 2024 started with a bang as basketball season kicked off with a spotlight on HISD’s Booker T. Washington’s senior power forward Chris McDermott.  The Washington Eagles were the favorite from HISD to return to state and bring home the championship but ultimately fell short in the 5th round. Fans eagerly awaited news about Chris McDermott’s next move, but he kept everyone in suspense until May when he officially announced his commitment to Texas A&M.

With basketball over, the focus quickly shifted to track and field, where Atascocita stole the spotlight, dominating several races and setting a national record at the Victor Lopez Classic. Their performance left rivals in awe, and as the UIL 6A State meet approached, the competition braced for a fiercely contested 4×100-meter relay. In a year defined by their excellence, the Atascocita boys’ relay team reigned supreme, leaving everyone else fighting for second place.

Baseball and softball also had their share of standout moments. Stars like Bralon Payne, Jada Cooper, and Kennedy Hill consistently sent balls flying over the fence, often earning intentional walks due to their prowess at the plate.

When football season rolled around, the Worthing Colts carried their momentum from last year, once again claiming the district championship title. However, in 2024, a second-half comeback sent them to round two in the playoffs.

The year concluded with an emotional and uplifting documentary about Ke’Lyn Washom, a 6-foot-3, 200-pound wide receiver from Nimitz High School. The film, viewed over 100,000 times, celebrated talent, perseverance, and overcoming adversity, moving many viewers to tears.

Check out the documentary below, and let us know which rising stars we should watch for in high school sports in 2025!
