Who knew actor/author Hill Harper was a father? Well, actually heโ€™s not a father because someone gave birth via his seed. No, Harper adopted a newborn son named Pierce 18 months ago.

He calls the move โ€œthe biggest blessing of my life.โ€ He recently spoke with โ€œGood Morning Americaโ€™sโ€ Robin Robertโ€™s about his life as a single father and how his โ€˜very dear friendโ€™ inspired him to adopt.

โ€œI always thought I was going to get married, have my own kids and I was going to adopt,โ€ Harper, 51, said. โ€œI had talked about adopting and I had talked about wanting to be this dad, and she said, โ€˜Youโ€™re going to be a great dad but I think youโ€™re waiting too long. You may get to a point where youโ€™ll decide youโ€™re not going to do it. Even though youโ€™re not married, why canโ€™t you just be a dad now?โ€™โ€

His friend convinced Harper to talk to an โ€œadoption personโ€ that she knew, just to โ€œlearn the process.โ€

โ€œI talked to the guy and I said, โ€˜You know, listen. I really appreciate you giving me the information, Iโ€™m just not ready. Iโ€™m not there,โ€™โ€ the actor recalled of their initial conversation. โ€œAnd then fast-forward to right before Thanksgiving of that year, I get a call from him. I was shooting a show called โ€˜Limitlessโ€™ at the time. I was in my dressing room and I didnโ€™t know why he was calling me. He says, โ€˜Thereโ€™s a wonderful young woman who is having a son in three weeks. Would you be interested in adopting him?โ€™โ€

Despite being initially freaked out at the thought of taking on the role of father to a newborn, Harper agreed to do it anyway. He says heโ€™s honored to be Pierceโ€™s father. In fact, he was even in the delivery room when his son was born.

โ€œI actually went from the set of โ€˜All Eyez on Me,โ€ flew to where she was giving birth and I was there in the delivery room and I cut the cord,โ€ he said. โ€œIโ€™m so proud that Pierce โ€” his name is Pierce Hill Harperโ€“ that Pierce chose me to be his dad.

โ€œItโ€™s the biggest blessing of my life,โ€ Harper added. โ€œThe biggest role, and certainly the biggest blessing.โ€

Harper, who rose to fame for his role as Dr. Sheldon Hawkes on the CBS drama โ€œCSI: NY,โ€ hopes his story will inspire and encourage anyone considering becoming an adoptive parent to follow through.

โ€œEvery day youโ€™re making a different set of decisions that you feel impact the future of this wonderful person,โ€ he said. โ€œThatโ€™s a challenge. Itโ€™s a beautiful challenge but itโ€™s a challenge.โ€

The most rewarding aspect of adoption?

โ€œI never felt I could love this deeply. I love him and heโ€™s my son,โ€ said Harper.
