Duane “Keffe D” Davis, a former gang leader from Los Angeles accused of orchestrating Tupac Shakur’s 1996 murder in Las Vegas, is seeking release from jail to prepare for his trial.
His attorney has filed a request for a $750,000 bond, proposing house arrest with electronic monitoring. A hearing is scheduled for Tuesday.
Davis has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and faces life imprisonment if convicted. His trial is set for November 4. Prosecutors have requested a “source hearing” to verify the legality of funds used for his potential release.
As the only surviving occupant of the vehicle involved in Shakur’s shooting, Davis has publicly admitted to organizing the attack but denies being the shooter. The case gained renewed attention after a police raid on Davis’s Henderson home last July.
Prosecutors cite Davis’s self-incriminating statements in various interviews and his 2019 memoir as strong evidence. The shooting also injured rap mogul Marion “Suge” Knight, who is currently serving time for an unrelated homicide.
Davis, originally from Compton, California, has been living in Henderson, Nevada, with his family in recent years. The renewed investigation into Shakur’s murder led to Davis’s arrest on September 29, 2023, after nearly three decades of the case remaining unsolved.
