Less than a week after eight students and two teachers were murdered at nearby Santa Fe High School by another student, Mayor Sylvester Turner announced the names of 37 local residents to serve on his Mayor’s Commission Against Gun Violence. Turner had formed the commission two months earlier in response to local students who were part of the national March for Our Lives movement against gun violence. The Mayor’s Commission recommended the placement of a police officer on every campus, the use of mobile apps to report and prevent school shootings, additional mental and behavioral resources for students and school personnel, initiatives to curb gun violence in cases of domestic violence and a focus on more community- based safety programs.
