Minnesota Governor Tim Walz formally accepted his party’s vice presidential nomination, addressing the Democratic National Convention to express gratitude for the support that has invigorated the campaign since Kamala Harris assumed the top spot on the presidential ticket.
“We’re all gathered here tonight for one simple, beautiful reason: our love for this country,” Walz declared.
The Democrats, convening at Chicago’s United Center, are eager to capitalize on the momentum Harris has generated since her elevation. They aim to channel the enthusiasm that followed President Joe Biden’s withdrawal while also underscoring the tough challenge posed by former President Donald Trump.
Walz, a relative newcomer to the national stage, has won over supporters with his Midwestern background, providing a contrast to Harris’ coastal roots. His initial weeks on the campaign trail have helped address regional concerns and build voter support. However, he has faced scrutiny, including allegations of exaggerating his background and criticism for a 2018 comment regarding weaponry in warfare, despite his long service in the National Guard without deployment to a conflict zone.
Benjamin C. Ingman, a former high school student of Walz, introduced him to the audience. Many of Walz’s former players from the 1999 high school state championship team, dressed in their red and white jerseys, joined him on stage, adding a personal touch to his introduction.
Clinton’s Stinging Critique

Walz’s address followed a fiery speech by former President Bill Clinton, who took to the convention stage to deliver a scathing critique of Donald Trump and to praise Kamala Harris for her commitment to the American people. Clinton, known for his persuasive oratory, brought his characteristic flair to the third night of the convention.
“We face a clear choice: Kamala Harris, dedicated to the people, versus a man who has shown time and again that he is only interested in himself,” Clinton stated.
At 78, Clinton, the 42nd president, displayed some signs of aging, with a slower pace and occasional verbal missteps. Despite this, he delivered memorable lines, urging listeners to “count the I’s” when evaluating Trump’s speeches.
Oprah Joins the Fray

Oprah Winfrey, who previously hosted her talk show in Chicago, seized the opportunity to take a jab at Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance. Winfrey criticized Vance’s disparaging remarks about “childless cat ladies,” asserting that such stereotypes are irrelevant and emphasizing the importance of voting.
“We are beyond ridiculous tweets and lies,” Winfrey declared. “Voting is the essence of what makes America great.”
A Focus on Freedoms
The convention’s theme, “a fight for our freedoms,” highlighted the Democratic commitment to protecting rights such as abortion access. Colorado Governor Jared Polis utilized a dramatic prop, an oversized book representing the Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025, to criticize its goals of shrinking government. Polis even tore a page from the book to underscore his point.
Other speakers, including Florida Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, shared poignant personal stories and robust statements against recent conservative policies.
Recognition of Hostages
On a somber note, Democrats paid tribute to the hostages held by Hamas following the October 7 attack on Israel. Jon and Rachel Goldberg-Polin, whose son Hersh was abducted, addressed the arena, emphasizing that freeing hostages is a humanitarian issue beyond politics.
The Israel-Hamas conflict has polarized the Democratic base, with protests and acknowledgments of civilian casualties in Gaza occurring alongside the convention’s activities and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
