Borrowers are eligible for cancellation if they are enrolled in the SAVE plan, originally borrowed $12,000 or less to attend college, and have made at least ten years of payments

President Joe Biden announced the cancellation of $1.2 billion in student loans for nearly 153,000 individuals. This initiative is part of a repayment plan designed to expedite debt forgiveness.

Biden said in a statement, “While a college degree is still a ticket to a better life, that ticket is too expensive. And too many Americans are still saddled with unsustainable debt in exchange for a college degree.”

“I understand Biden is doing what he can. Student debt is a polarizing issue at the White House. But there needs to be a serious overhaul of the higher education system because I feel robbed, and the SAVE plan isn’t enough to save the millions still drowning in massive debt.”

A Houston-area tech professional, Nate Williams is saddled with more than $80,000 in student loan debt. He changed careers when he realized his $45,000 salary in social work wasn’t enough to tackle the loans with high interest.

“It has been stressful, feeling like I have to work two or three jobs on top of an already demanding career,” he said. “I had to transition into another higher paying career so I can actually make a dent in payments.”

This targets Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) repayment program participants. Aimed at those who borrowed $12,000 or less and have diligently repaid for at least a decade, the plan is set to benefit community college and other borrowers with smaller loans significantly.

Jessica Carter, is taking on $30,000 in student debt. She earned a degree in communications with hopes that she could get her foot in the door as a media professional. Her first offer after graduation barely scratched $40,000 in 2019, She has since taken more freelance opportunities to alleviate costs and hopes there will one day be a general sweep of student loan debt for all.

“I understand Biden is doing what he can. Student debt is a polarizing issue at the White House,” she said. “But there needs to be a serious overhaul of the higher education system because I feel robbed, and the SAVE plan isn’t enough to save the millions still drowning in massive debt.”

The White House emphasized that this move will put many on a faster track to liberate them from student debt. The administration started notifying eligible borrowers through emails, surprising them by initiating the cancellations almost six months ahead of schedule. The first forgiveness phase under the SAVE plan will free $1.2 billion in loans.

In his emails, Biden personally addressed the beneficiaries, stating, “All or a portion of your federal student loans will be forgiven because you qualify for early loan forgiveness under my Administration’s SAVE Plan.”

Biden, acknowledging the life-altering impact of debt relief, stated in his emails, “I heard from countless people who have told me that relieving the burden of their student loan debt will allow them to support themselves and their families, buy their first home, start a small business, and move forward with life plans they’ve put on hold.”

The administration has canceled over $138 billion in student debt for nearly 3.9 million people so far.
