The memorial service for beloved Houston-area broadcasting legend José Griñán will be held on June 4.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, June 4, for longtime FOX 26 Houston anchor José Griñán, who passed away on May 26 at the age of 72.

Services will take place at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, located at 1111 St. Joseph Parkway, Houston, Texas 77002.

  • Words of Remembrance: 6:30–6:50 p.m.
  • Memorial Mass: 7 p.m.
  • Final Salute and Military Honors: 8 p.m.

The services will also be livestreamed for those unable to attend in person. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to one of the organizations listed by the family.

Griñán, a revered figure in Houston’s broadcasting community, spent three decades anchoring the morning news at KRIV-TV (FOX 26), becoming one of the most trusted and recognizable voices in the city. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by family.

A veteran journalist and U.S. Army combat correspondent, Griñán brought both discipline and heart to every newsroom he joined. His career spanned major markets including Miami, New York and Los Angeles before he made Houston his home in 1993.

Born in Tampa, Fla., to Cuban-American parents, Griñán was a pioneer in the industry — one of the few Afro-Latino men to anchor in a top U.S. television market during his era. He was widely respected not only for his professionalism but also for the compassion and cultural insight he brought to every story.

“He had a voice that commanded attention, but it was his heart that really made the difference,” said photographer Ray Williams, who worked with Griñán for more than 30 years. “Jose was the gold standard.”

Off-camera, Griñán was just as impactful. He served on nonprofit boards, emceed countless community events, and mentored aspiring journalists—especially young journalists of color. Many remember his frequent reminder: “Stay ready so you don’t have to get ready.”

In his 2021 retirement interview, Griñán said: “If I’ve helped someone else find their way in this business, then I’ve done something right.”

He is survived by his wife, Kathy, their children and grandchildren, and the many colleagues, mentees and community members whose lives he touched.

As Houston reflects on the life and legacy of José Griñán, his own words from his farewell broadcast remain a guiding light: “Be kind, stay informed, and don’t forget where you came from.”
