Black women deserve so much more love than what society gives them. Let’s honor them with our sincere participation in Women’s History Month events.

The only thing more tiring than hearing/reading Malcolm X’s oft-quoted words about Black women – you know, the one about her being the most disrespected, unprotected, neglected person in America – is the fact that it’s still true. That is to our shame as a species.

There is no universe without the Black woman. She’s literally the mother of all humanity. Yet, she is treated so far below her rightful status that the entire planet should repent.

The list of things we need to do to right this wrong is too lengthy for this article. However, at the very least, we can honor her timeless brilliance via our sincere participation in events during Women’s History Month that seek to celebrate, encourage, support, and empower Black women.

Here are a few such events that seek to do just that:

Phenomenal Women’s Conference

The Phenomenal Women’s Conference, presented by the Pink Phoenix and hosted by entrepreneur extraordinaire Theresa Metcalfe, will take place March 1 & 2 at the Westin Houston, Memorial City (945 Gessner Rd., 77024), beginning at 6 p.m. on March 1 and at 4:30 p.m. on March 2.

The event poses this question to participants: “What is your supHER power?” Event speakers, which include Kim Roxie, Kim Ailch, Kimmy the Stylist, LaTisha Grant, JP Watkins-Mukes, and more, will certainly help attendees answer that question and leave empowered.

Art and Fashion Fusion Event

The Bisong Art Gallery (1305 Sterrett St Houston, TX 77002) is celebrating Women’s History Month with art and fashion on March 3 from 3 p.m. – 6 p.m. The Gallery encourages the general public to “step into a realm where creativity knows no bounds” to experience an enchanting afternoon of art and fashion fusion described further as “an immersive experience that seamlessly intertwines the worlds of visual aesthetics and sartorial elegance.”

Attendees will view on display contemporary artwork from artists with diverse backgrounds and creativity. They will also witness the unveiling of the House of Couture Houston’s latest creations, “blending innovation, tradition, and a touch of the unexpected.”

Texas Medical Center Orchestra Concert

The Texas Medical Center Orchestra will present a special concert commemorating Women’s History Month on March 3 starting at 5 p.m. and Zilkha Hall, Hobby Center (800 Bagby, Houston, TX 77002). According to the TMC, “This concert promises to be an unforgettable journey, unveiling new dimensions of musical exploration and leaving you with a sense of wonder and inspiration.”

The general public is encouraged to join the TMC for this “enchanting evening of musical discovery and let the melodies, rhythms, and emotions carry you to uncharted realms of artistry.”
