Donald Trump as a giant destroying the White House with a sledgehammer.
Here’s a breakdown of 10 damaging Republican moves, from gutting voting rights to election interference, that have eliminated American democracy. Credit: ChatGPT

Republicans can miss me with any rhetoric about their belief in or defense of democracy. Their actions show them to be arguably the most anti-democratic entity on planet earth. The irony is, these same GOP lawmakers have historically (and recently) been quick to find trillions of dollars to go to war with and/or invade any nation on the planet under their banner (i.e., BS excuse) that “fill-in-the-blank” country is anti-democracy.

But any supposedly anti-democracy moves being made by other countries pale in comparison to what Republicans, guided by the principles of white nationalism, are doing on American soil.

Here’s a breakdown of moves so egregious and damaging that it’s inaccurate to say they are “potentially harmful” to democracy. These GOP moves have murdered democracy and shoved its corpse in a vat of acid so that the body disappears from planet earth (like they did to the democratically elected leader of the Congo, Patrice Lumumba, in January 1961).

Weakening the Voting Rights Act (2026)

In Louisiana v. Callais (April 2026), the conservative Supreme Court majority (6-3) ruled that using Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act to require maps with Black-majority districts was improper. Critics, including Justice Kagan, argued this effectively gutted the Act’s protections against racial gerrymandering, enabling red states to eliminate competitive districts.

Recently, and inspired by that Supreme Court ruling weakening the Voting Rights Act, Tennessee approved a new congressional map that dismantles a majority-Black district, directly impacting voting power in the Memphis area. Tennessee essentially whited out all Black voters and voices in the entire state; a victory so sweeping, it inspired state GOP lawmakers to don Trump 2024 capes and run through that state’s legislative building, shouting about their victory over democracy’s “one person, one vote system.”

Even more insane, Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry (R) actually declared a state of emergency and suspended the state’s congressional primary election — which has already begun — in a shocking effort to hastily gerrymander (rig) a district to lessen Black voter impact following the recent SCOTUS ruling gutting the Voting Rights Act.

Other Southern states taking action or scrambling to redraw maps to reduce Black voting power include Alabama and Mississippi, with more potentially on the way.

The “SAVE America Act” push (2025-2026)

Republicans in Congress and at the state level (modeled after the federal SAVE Act) introduced laws requiring strict “documentary proof of citizenship” to register, which critics call a “show your papers” policy. Proponents claim it prevents non-citizen voting, but opponents state it disproportionately restricts voting access for women who have changed names, students, and low-income voters.

The kicker: countless Republicans are on record as saying they don’t believe women should have the right to vote, and provide “biblical” justification for the sexism. Yet, 53% of white women still voted Republican. GOP members are also on record questioning and even denying that current U.S.-born American citizens who are Black, Brown, or who practice a faith other than Christianity are not actually U.S. citizens, and should thus be denied the right to vote. Man, if only there had been a 922-page document that was free to the public that literally spelled out the GOP plan to take away the right to vote from women and Blackfolk.

Mid-decade redistricting campaign (2025-2026)

Following the Callais ruling, GOP officials in states including Texas, Florida, and Louisiana aggressively pursued redrawing electoral maps to increase Republican control in the 2026 midterms. In fact, the Virginia Supreme Court recently blocked a new Democratic-drawn congressional map from taking effect, a map approved by a majority of Virginia’s citizens in an election. So, in essence, even though the people voted and their initiative won, a GOP-dominated court, with one flick of the judicial pen, overturned the will of the people (i.e., the democratic will of Virginia citizens). Political analysts say this will be the GOP playbook going forward—if Republican initiatives and positions lose at the ballot box because of the will of the majority, GOP-run legislatures and state supreme courts will simply throw out democratically earned victories. That’s literally a stake through the heart of democracy.

Project 2025’s civil service changes (2025-2026)

The Trump Administration finalized a rule in February 2026, effective March 9, 2026, to reclassify thousands of civil servants as political appointees (Schedule F). This allows the president to fire non-partisan experts and replace them with jock-riding yes-men and yes-women, who will rubber-stamp anything their “king” wants done.

Weaponizing the Justice Department (2025-2026)

The Trump Administration has used the Department of Justice to target political opponents and investigate individuals engaged in constitutionally protected activity. That’s a move America used to call out Russia, China, North Korea, and other “enemies of democracy” on.

Pardoning Jan. 6th insurrectionists (2025)

Youtube video

Early in his 2025 term, Trump issued pardons to individuals involved in the January 6th insurrection, reversing federal efforts to hold them accountable for trying to overturn the democratically held and certified 2020 election. This also set a precedent regarding Trump’s endorsement of political violence against any individuals, entities, or policies he didn’t like. ICE-ICE baby.

State-level election interference laws (2025-2026)

Multiple states passed legislation giving partisan state-level actors increased authority to intervene in local election administration. At least seven states enacted laws specifically aimed at interfering in election processes, likely to impact 2026 results. Yet, there are still “Knee-grows” out there claiming voting doesn’t matter.

Rescinding civil rights protections in housing (2025-2026)

Under Project 2025 guidance, the administration weakened the Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing rule and removed civil rights requirements from disaster funding, reducing the federal role in combating discrimination.

Attempted control over election systems (2025)

The dude currently occupying the Oval Office issued an Executive Order in March 2025 to assert federal control over state-run voter registration and election procedures, a move that bypasses local officials and violates state autonomy. And with all the insanity Trump unleashes daily, this move doesn’t even “sound” so terrible. Yet, it could be the most damaging to democracy. State and local politics have been democracy’s firewall over these past few years. If that power disappears, the fat lady “done been sang.”

Targeting overseas voter rights (2025-2026)

Republican lawmakers introduced the PROVE Act, which would require overseas citizens (including military personnel) to have a physical “current residence” in a state, making it harder for millions of Americans living abroad to vote.
