From Louisiana to Houston, Ashia Johnson made a move that paid off professionally and communally. Relocating to grow her budding healthcare career, Johnson has spent more than two decades navigating a demanding field while keeping her focus firmly on service.
But thatโs far from the full story.
Beyond her professional achievements, Johnson has emerged as a powerful force for empowerment, particularly for Black women seeking space, support, and opportunity in health-focused and personal development arenas.
As a child, Johnson dreamed of becoming a politician. And though she chose a different path, it has still allowed her to serve, advocate, and improve peopleโs lives. Today, she channels that drive into improving healthcare realities across the greater Houston area and into uplifting women of all ages and backgrounds.
In 2022, she founded Sistahz Full Circle, a nonprofit created to meet those goals. Though the organization is part-time in structure, its impact is anything but limited.
Birth of Sistahz Full Circle
Johnsonโs full-time work in healthcare is challenging and meaningful in its own right. Over the years, she has worked in multiple modalities, with her current role focused on rural health and addressing disparities in underserved communities. She often asks how healthcare advocates can ensure that people outside major metropolitan areas receive โadequate yet quality healthcare close to home.โ
Still, Sistahz Full Circle allows Johnson to reach even further.
The inspiration for the nonprofit began at home, with her daughters, Brooklyn and Addison.
โI recognized that as they were getting older, where were spaces in which they could learn more about personal professional development?โ asked Johnson, who saw the same void amongst peers and colleagues.
Not finding a space, she decided to create her own to connect women facing shared obstacles and aspirations.
โHow do we network and work with other women who want to continue to perform at their highest,โ she asked, โwhether it’s in a personal or professional capacity?โ
Those reflections, rooted in motherhood and professional experience, ultimately led her to launch Sistahz Full Circle.
Focus and mission
Sistahz Full Circle is a registered 501(c)(3) that serves as a womenโs support and empowerment group for women ages 18 to 55.
โThe organization works with women who want to enhance their personal and/or professional development, regardless of the specific goal,โ said Johnson. โWhether a woman wants to earn a cosmetology license, return to school, or pursue a creative passion, the organization seeks ways to partner with her journey.โ
That partnership includes mentorship, guidance, and in some cases, stipends to help offset program costs. Beyond individual support, Sistahz Full Circle is deeply engaged in volunteerism and outreach throughout the Houston community, reinforcing the idea that empowerment is both personal and collective.
Programs in action
The nonprofit currently runs two ongoing campaigns: Be Kind to Myself and Ladies First. Be Kind to Myself focuses on coordinating in-kind donations of feminine hygiene products, which are then distributed to Houston-area organizations in need. Johnson notes that many nonprofits can benefit from access to these essential items, and collaboration is central to the effort.
โWith Ladies First, we ask the community to provide undergarments for women,โ said Johnson. โWe recognize that there’s a need, so Sistahz Full Circle collaborates with other non-profits in which we’re able to provide those essential products that make women feel confident and strong, and hopefully ready to secure whatever endeavors they want to, either from a personal or professional standpoint.โ
Impact and testimony

When asked which testimony best reflects the organizationโs impact, Johnson points to Whitney B., known as โThe Dopest Historian.โ
A recent Texas Southern University (TSU) graduate, Whitney B. is a Houston-based public historian dedicated to making history accessible and engaging. Since launching her brand in 2020, she has curated events, hosted tours, and reshaped how people connect with the past.
Through Sistahz Full Circle, Whitney B. has worked on multiple Black history tours, including an upcoming collaboration exploring TSU’s history, culminating at the historic Savoy. Johnson describes the partnership as a powerful example of mutual uplift, supporting someone who was up-and-coming and watching her โblossom and develop.โ
And people are taking notice of Johnsonโs impact.
โAshia Johnson is the kind of leader who doesnโt just talk about community, she actively builds it,โ said Christina Meade, founder and executive director of the nonprofit Nerdy Girl Success. โAshia shows up consistently, collaborates generously, and creates spaces where women are truly supported.
โHer commitment to uplifting others is both genuine and impactful.โ
Mentorship and purpose
While Johnson values her healthcare career, she says Sistahz Full Circle offers another level of fulfillment.
โI do feel as if there’s some source of spiritual guidance. I have a purpose here. I enjoy serving as a vessel.โ
Ashia Johnson
โI do feel as if there’s some source of spiritual guidance. I have a purpose here. I enjoy serving as a vessel,โ shared Johnson.
That commitment extends beyond the nonprofit itself. On her own time, Johnson mentors young women entering healthcare, along with MHA and MBA students, often prioritizing connections with HBCUs.
She also supports entry- and mid-level professionals and women new to Houston, recognizing a growing desire for community engagement across industries. The organizationโs philosophy is simple: partner with like-minded, driven women who want to do moreโnot just for themselves, but for others. The only requirement is to pay it forward.
For Johnson, the true reward comes when she sees that cycle in motion. Watching a woman who has been mentored or supported go on to uplift someone else is, she says, fulfillment in its purest form.
